Why do we need sports?
Dear reader,
Saying ‘sports changed our lives’ would be an understatement. Yes, we had our successes in the arena, but sports did a lot more for us. It shaped our personality, our behaviour and our view of the world. Today, it’s been years since we played competitive sport, but the spirit remains rooted in us and guides us every single day.
We believe that the spirit of sport is a uniquely valuable skill every child would do extraordinarily well to have. That belief is what led us to start TENVIC and tenaciously run it through thick and thin.
At the granular level, every child has a sportsperson in them. They are born with curiosity and athleticism — it is our duty to nurture it for a healthy, resilient and successful society.
We’ve seen youth in turbulent towns embrace sport and direct their energies to positive pursuits. We’ve watched children from highly disadvantaged backgrounds become world champions. In schools, we regularly notice shy, reticent children come alive while playing a team sport.
On a larger scale, every developed nation is also a sporting nation. Competitive sport represents a country’s investment, appreciation and faith in its soft power. It completes the circle of all-round development. The pride of wearing the tricolour on an international podium is tangible.
Despite its many advantages, we regularly hear parents worry about choosing sport as a career. “Education is important,” they say. We couldn’t agree more.
At TENVIC, we believe that school education and sports education have a beautifully symbiotic relationship. A well-educated athlete tends to be more open to opportunities, more confident and more comfortable on the global stage. On the other hand, an athletic student is sharper, more innovative and distinctly more resilient in the chaotic world. We strongly believe that sport shouldn’t come at the expense of education — we are graduates ourselves. So, we’ve designed all our programs to make space for both.
In fact, we also realise that not every athlete plays for India or becomes a medalist. It is just the way of the world. We don’t think of that as failure, only as a valuable skill gained to be deployed elsewhere.
Our ‘life after sport’ modules acknowledge this and help athletes transition to alternate careers with their spirit intact — be it within sports as a coach, mentor, or commentator or in a completely different field, as many of our students are.
From a curious child to a retiring champion, from rural government schools to elite sports teams, from fresh graduates to board of directors, TENVIC seeks to make a positive contribution to the lives of every individual, organisation and community through sport.
We do hope you’ll join us in this vigorous and meaningful journey.
Let’s shake on that,
Anil and Vasanth.
